As someone who has been following this soap opera drama.... it should be noted that the prices are the Licensing fees to be paid by Linux DISTRIBUTORS, not aimed at the end-users...... The SCO is claiming that it owns the copyrights on some of the coding that has been included within the Linkux Kernal. Whether they have the right to lay claim to the $$$ is a matter of debate.StPatrick said:Well, still some versions of Linux will remain free, for example RedHat Linux. Yeah, sure they should talk (debate) about this. But what Linus Torvalds claims, that even if the code is line-by-line identical to the code in Unix, still Sun (or whoever) has no rights to it, because it was written by IBM [in Linux]. Strange though, do I have to type the code, or can I make copy-paste to take ownership? His statement is more than a fiddle. Remembering his previous "wise thoughts", I just can't take this man seriously. About a year ago someone said that Linux has an implementation of some patented algorithm, and Linus answered: "Who cares, if we'll need to, we'll find another algorithm, patented or not". He sounds like a child, when someone took his car model
Also, SCO claims that prices and licenses are for *each* desktop computer. I don't think that redestributers will pay fees by themselves, rather they place a price for Linux OS for end-users.
