ASP Mail Components

Hello,

Some clients sites are not able to send emails to external addresses. They are all using ASPMail, ASPEmail, or other ASP components. I do not know how long this has been an issue but it is quite disturbing. I read another forum post that states that the RemoteHost or SMTP needs to be set to localhost. Is this correct?

If this is, I would have appreciated Jodohost telling me in some way that I should not use the recommended SMTP property defined in the documentation for these scripts. I don't believe this is the standard setup for this setting and no other host I have used has had issues using mail.thedomain.com. All I can say is this is very embarrassing for me as this may have been an issue for a while. Since I was receiving the emails at addresses at Jodo host I assumed they were functioning correctly. Obviously, I should have tested this and my assumptions were wrong.

The other thing that is confusing is why it works on some domains and not others. I tested it on two domains today where one worked and the other did not. Doing the same test now, neither works. They are now both returning the error: Error was 503 RCPT first (#5.5.1). Changing the SMTP property fixes the issue but again, I wish I had known this before.

Irritated and confused...

I am not sure which component you are using, but I typically recommend CDOSYS with SMTP auth to ensure best delivery at all times.

Hey Stephen. Thanks for the reply. I have CDOSYS functions in a couple sites but some applications were built using the components on these sites and others are using ASPMail or ASPEmail. These components were requirements when I looked for another host because of the multiple sites using them.

I can switch them all out to use CDOSYS but this takes time to implement and test. This adds to the overhead of switching reseller hosts. I could charge my clients but it seems sort of shady to charge them as hosting customers because I moved them to a host that didn't support the same technology or scripting. The cost of moving from one reseller host to another is already high because of the poor migration abilities from one HSphere host to another HSphere host. It all adds up to make reselling more difficult.

I did test all the forms when I moved all my clients to Jodo but I only tested with email addresses at Jodo, so I thought they were working fine. I am negligent for not testing external emails but it still would have been nice to know that the mail components at Jodo do not work using the component's documented properties.

I'm still confused why using mail.domain.com works with some sites and not others. I assume this is because they are different servers with different configurations.

I will use CDOSYS from now on but I am still not happy and embarrassed that some of my sites were not functioning as expected. I only hope I do not loose any business because of this issue.

Adding a warning about this to a welcome email, as part of the Step-by-Step Reseller Guide, or as a sticky notice in the forums would save others the hassle and embarrassment.

ASPMail works fine without any issue :)

ASPEmail can't do smtp auth as it is the free version, which means you can't send via mail.domain.com only via localhost. Localhost works fine but it randomly selects outgoing IPs which sometimes gets rejected for not having rDNS.

Hey Stephen, I am using ASPMail, from ServerObjects, which is not sending to external email when mail.domain.com is used. I tried it on two domains, it never sent on the first and it sent once or twice on the second but now does not work. I get the error message: 503 RCPT first (#5.5.1) only when using an external email address. Is this a different issue? Maybe it was working at some point but it is not now. Thanks for the help!
