Dedicated IP justifications

Exalted Code Master!
I have a client asking for a dedicated IP. He wants to manage his DNS offsite. He also operates a web cam on his site. He feels he will need the dedicated IP for both these purposes.

I know we're supposed to justify dedicated IPs here. Other than for ecommerce, what are sufficient reasons to justify an address?

In short, will I be able to assign him an address?

Thanks,
Tim

I've never done off site DNS management. Is there a guide or FAQ someplace that I can point him to? The main thing is to make him comfortable that he can do his stuff without the dedicated IP (which he has now, so he feels he still needs).

Thanks,
Tim

I would have thought he would need a dedicated IP for the webcam, but that would usually be supplied by his ISP.

Most IP enabled Webcams run a webserver, so you just point your browser at the IP address of it and hey presto you can view it. The trouble with Jodo supplying a dedicated IP for the webcam is it would be in completley the wrong subnet for him (unless the webcam is in the datacentre).

Alternativly he signs up to a dynamic IP servive (dyndns.org) - he can then use a DHCP address from his ISP which will update dyndns.org.

So in short, a user goes to http://his.domain.com and see's his website (hosted at Jodo), the user then clicks the link to view his webcam which sends them to http://his.dyndns.org which directs the user down his ISP connection..

Does that make sense?

Correct, our IPs are only routed by us, and a custoemr cna not use them outside our network.

Thanks Greggers. Your post certainly does help me understand what's going on. (Can you tell I've never set up a web cam before! :D )
