hosting only subdomain?

I'm setting up a client that only needs me to host a subdomain on a static IP (subdomain.client.edu). DNS is 3rd party, mail will be 3rd party as well. In order to establish the account w/ the subdomain I have no option but to first establish the full domain (client.edu).

I appreciate that the main domain entry will be ignored as long as the DNS settings remain untouched, but a) is it possible to delete the main domain and leave the subdomain in place, and b) is there any situation where this setup would cause problems (e.g. the site at subdomain.client.edu tries makes a DNS query for the mail servers at client.edu, and gets the internal DNS record served up instead of the 3rd party DNS records)?

You sure you are not able to add this sub-domain (without adding the main domain) in control panel?
It is not possible to delete the main-domain, when it has a sub-domain.
If the domain is already live, you can disable mail and web service for the main domain to any possible problem at DNS level.
Overall I don't see a problem here.
