Internap

Merry christmas to everyone!

Great move with internap. I was wondering, if Level3 ever goes down again, would internap or global crossing go down?

I'm very happy you guys don't use cogent like so many providers. I've heard alot of bad stories about them...

We've done quite alot to prevent a Level3 outage from ever again affecting our network

Level3, internap and Globalcrossing are bgp'd. The BGP router basically pushes out data across these three tier-1 providers based on a percentage we select. If any provider goes down, content would continue to be served by the other 2.

That provided that Level3 continues to broadcast their IPs in an event of a Level3 outage (which is almost always the case). Level3 is a premium bandwidth provider and we pay some of the highest rates to them so barring the few incidents during summer, we do consider them as quality providers. Level3 is housed one floor underneath where the datacenter is so there is a gbps fibre going down to them :)

We do pay for the best providers. What we pay to for our bandwidth and network is much higher than what we'd pay if we'd have our servers with theplanet or ev1servers or alot of the popular datacenters that alot of companies choose.

Also, we are paying for paid transit, not peering rights.
