IP Usage Policy

IPs are in short supply and ARIN (American Registry for Internet Numbers) has been pushing hosting companies to conserve IP space and promote name-based hosting. ARIN no longer accepts virtual accounts as sufficient justification for an IP assignment. We have therefore been forced to make it necessary that any dedicated IP assignments to domains must only be made if it is absolutely required. IP assignments are thus only allowed if they are to be used for any of the following:

1) SSL/Shared SSL
2) 3rd Party DNS
3) Anonymous FTP
4) Virtual FTP (A Unix Service)

Customers who require dedicated IPs for other reasons are requested to write to the support team.

I am providing a bump for this topic as many people are using IP addresses for items well outside of the allowed purpose, and it is not allowed to be used just for hosting a site or 'SEO' purposes. There is a defined process and it will be followed. In addition it is not required to have a dedicated IP for simply using 3rd party DNS, only if providing DNS to others as a primary and secondary name server for example, this issue mostly comes on servers/VPS solutions.

Anonymous FTP as justification is also checked carefully to insure it is used and not simply configured and always idle for the purpose of claiming an IP.

These policies are set in place and enforced due to the limited nature of IPv4 IP space available. Over the last year the addressable space available has been exhausted and without policing the existing space carefully there will not be enough needed IPs for SSL and other business purposes that may be needed.
