MX on another host - DNS setup

I trying to set up MX and A record for a list server on another host, but not quite got it right somehow. Currently the main domain is on JH. I need a subdomain address to work for the listserv; this has no website, it's just a mail server.

So if my main domain is mydomain.com the DNS for listserv.mydomain.com needs an A record to their IP, and a MX record to that subdomain name.

A record: listserv.mydomain.com>IP address
MX record: listserv.mydomain.com>listserv.mydomain.com

Should I create the subdomain on JH and change those DNS records in the subdomain DNS, or simply add listserv.mydomain.com A and MX records to the DNS for mydomain.com?
 
You can technically do it either way (create subdomain and add, or in main root records)
