#!/usr/bin/perl

Is that the correct first line?

Also what are the permissions for writing to a data file. Is it just User write, or does Group and other also have to have write checked..........Thx, z

Yes, that is correct for unix, windows ignores that line, so it is not required.

Thanks Stephen.....was debugging a counting script that used to work..........turns out I had to reset my permissions on the executable to 755..........btw, user is the web user calling the script through html, but what is Group and other?....Thx, z

I am not much on unix these days,but 777 will for sure work, 755 SHOULD work.
