Resource intensive processes?

Last night, around midnight (-5 GMT), I was making changes to my website when things began to really crawl. Thinking it was something I had altered in the code or in the framework configuration I set upon a path of tediously waiting 5 minutes at a time in some cases for a page to pop up.

After about 45 minutes I finally reverted all changes. Of course the problem was still happening. It was random and occurred in places that used code that I never altered or in places where the configuration had not changed. I opened a live chat and was told that the web server was not having a problem. This may be, but the MSSQL server might have been.

In any event, I was tired and went to bed only slightly annoyed that my website had issues.

This morning I just logged in and the site is screaming again. I've changed nothing and no one else has access to. I have now begun implementing the changes I made last night and still no problems. This begs the question...

What was going on last night that caused this?

Any information that can be provided would be greatly appreciated.

Hello,

I was online at the time you came on livechat, I even looked up the server performance for the tech, it had over 2GB Free ram and was running at 6% cpu usage when you came in, and the averages for it were less than 10% for the previous hour. I am unsure what you had, maybe it was a routing issue between your ISP and our server?

Certainly a potential issue I suppose. After that frustration and being that late I never thought to check the performance by accessing via my VPN connection elsewhere.

Thank you for the response. It was a very strange issue and since the move to the new server the site has been screaming so I was quite reluctant to blame the server (which is why I backed out all my code changes, etc.).
