spam from my computer

Somehow spam is being sent from my computer - could anyone point me in the right direction to find out more about how this is done ... and how to stop it?

Try something like zonealarm.

Its a free firewall, fire it up and it'll block all outgoing traffic unless you specifically allow it. You'll soon identify the process thats sending mail out.

you should also try to search for viruses and spyware as that is probably the reason for your problems
