VPS LAMP - The perennial questions...

Questions about VPS - LAMP Versions

  1. Linux OS and Version
  2. Can I use 'yum update' or 'rpm update' to quickly update the OS without breaking Hsphere?
  3. Does Jodohost pro-actively update those services that will break Hsphere as soon as Hsphere comes out with a new update, especially those involving security issues?
  4. PHP Version - When a newer stable version of PHP becomes available, does Hsphere allow me to choose the updated PHP version so I don't break my site?
  5. MySQL Version - hsphere update
  6. Apache Version
  7. Perl Version
  8. FTP Version - I use DWMX - is sftp installed?
  9. Qmail Version
  10. EZMLM Version - If not EZMLM, what list manager is used and is there a CP interface to mass-enter digest members?
  11. Spam Assassin and ClamAV included? (Y/N)
  12. Root access to edit/tweak qmail files? (Y/N)
  13. I spoke briefly with someone in presales and noticed these things:
    • No ring tone for about 30 seconds before the sales person answered.
    • The gentleman greeted me with 'Hello?' There was nothing to let me know I'd actually reached Jodohost sales or support.
    • Noticeable lag between our responses, causing us to speak over one another.
    • He could barely here me, and I could barely hear him.
    • Very polite, but we had trouble communicating because of language differences and phone lag.
    • He told me VPS uses RH7.3 - a very outdated OS that is no longer supported by Redhat - and terribly insecure. Please tell me this is not the case.
I'm a little concerned that this type of phone conversation would be about what I could expect if I need to speak with a tech person about my hosting situation. Anything that can be said to allay these concerns would be appreciated.
  14. Is there a host directory that has third-party ratings of your success as a host, such as http://www.hostsearch.com/ ?
  15. In lieu of this, I'd like to get some feedback from current customers about Jodohost as a host.
  16. I'd like to know a few domains that are set up on Value, Silver or GoldVPS so I can check out response time to page calls. Does the GoldVPS have enough clout to easily handle a nuke-style site where everything is combined on the fly at if your really do have 20GB bandwidth per month? Silver at 10GB? Value at 5GB?
  17. Is the monthly price quoted actually billed monthly, or is it really the monthly cost on of a yearly contract?

Thanks for your responses!

Cheers,

Chris

devorem,

Thanks for your reply.

So -- VPS is barebones? Move in and set it up yourself?
Not even apache or anything? With 500MB - 2GB, by the time you've got everything installed, there would be no room for a website. Sounds like a bad deal to me.

Cheers,

Chris

The barebones installation is about 325 MB, but Apache and PHP or whatever you need don't take that much extra..

Hi Subspace,

Thanks for your reply too.

Are you saying the installation of important stuff after the barebones completion takes up about 325MB of alotted space? Not a very big website, if you have a lot of press releases and pdf's to distribute...

Is there a non-barebones, non-reseller option that doesn't cost more and doesn't count against the space? (Stop laughing, now...) :)

No, I meant the OS and the basic stuff takes about 325 MB. Add Apache and PHP to that and you'd have 150 MB or so left for the website..

Why exactly do you want a VPS account to host a website though? :)

I need these things:
  • List management software that takes care of itself.
  • Archive software that takes care of itself.
  • The latest LAMP that can be easily updated and secure.
  • At least 5GB of space for web and archive pages.
  • Better than 15GB bandwidth per month. And I don't mean the upper limit. That's about what we use. A lot of hosts entice new clients with an upper limit that hardly anyone ever reaches, so they can afford to seem "magnanimous." I need a host that lives up to this and delivers mail and server-include-riddled pages seemlessly and quickly.
  • Easy domain/subdomain/DNS/MX handling
  • Easy mailbox management, SpamAssassin, ClamAV
  • A price tag that really gets my attention.
Isn't that what we all want? :D

With root access, I can take care of A and B above if the other items fall into place. Nobody offers decent prepackaged list management and archiving with a webhosting solution. All I can say is hosting companies are missing the boat. Good lists are member driven, and a reasonable GUI interface makes the difference.

Members depend on a totally transparent, automated subscription system and searchable archive. I don't want to disappoint. If there is a better option, even perhaps other than Jodohost, feel free to let me know in this thread or via private message on this venue.

Cheers,

Chris

You could try combining a VPS account for some of your weird stuff and also use a shared Linux hosting plan for some of your web hosting storage pieces. If you get a reseller plan, you get access to Windows, Linux, and VPS (and Oracle). Even the LiteHost plan gives you 30GB transfer but you might need to go with SilverHost to meet your 5GB of disk space needs met. Of course, since that's $70/mo, you might not feel that it is low cost.

Thanks devorem.

You're right, the reseller plans are too expensive.
I'd rather not split more subdomains over different servers. I've already got that happening with part of the site, and it's a bit of a nightmare.

Cheers,

Chris

EV1servers.net has large VPS packages with massive transfer allowances...but I think the CP is plesk, not H-s. Can't vouch for their service or support, have never used them.
