Need a good FTP client

Exalted Code Master!
I need a good FTP client...I was using LeechFTP when my sites were hosted elsewhere. It's an old, unsupported (developer MIA), freeware app. It was great, but it doesn't work here. It won't upload files reliably (or at all).

I tried FileZilla but I'm having all sorts of problems with it. It quite regularly gives files the wrong names when I upload batches of files. This wreaks havoc with my sites for sure!

What are you using? I'm looking for:

  • A Windows app
  • A low resource using app that I can leave open all the time (option to minimize to system tray is preferred).
  • Ability to save all my site login details for dozens of web sites in an organized fashion
  • High performing, multi-threaded app
  • Freeware, open source, or low-priced app (<$20)
  • And works reliably with sites hosted here!!

Thanks,
Tim

I have been using filezilla for a long time with no problems, even for large amount of files, can you tell me how it renames them, that seems quite odd.

Let's say I have files named file1.php, file2.php, file3.php, etc. When uploading them as a batch, file2.php (and perhaps file3, etc.) will contain the contents of file1.php. It will still be named file2.php and there will be no error reports. Oh, and this happens with all types of files, not just the php I've used as an example here.

To get around this, I have to upload each file individually and wait for it to fully upload before starting the next upload. ... that's quite a pain with, say, phpBB, Mambo, etc.

wow, I have never had that issue with filezilla, in fact I have had most success with it over any other FTP client for large numbers of files!

I agree, Filezilla transfers the fastest and is the most reliable for me. The only problem with filezilla is it doesn't have support for drag and drop...

i use something called Terrapin FTP, basically because its connected with my ISP and ive just gotten used to it,

it does crash now and then but apart from that i find it suits my needs

Thanks all for the suggestions. I tried Smart FTP but I wasn't thrilled with it. I've installed the newest version of FileZilla to see if maybe that corrects the issues I was having, but I haven't had much of a chance to use it. I'll give Terrapin a look.

Thanks,
Tim

you should figure out smart ftp, its really the best and easiest to use once you get a hang of it... best of its free

I use SmartFTP with my laptop and have no problems with it.

On my 2 other machines, I use WS_FTP from Ipswitch. I've used it for years, starting with the "lite" version several years ago, and have never had a problem with it.

SmartFTP is free for personal, non-profit, and educational use. I'd be using this for my business and would therefore have to pay for it. I didn't like it enough to pay for it. But, thanks for the input anyway.

I've found that I get no upload errors by setting FileZilla to upload only one file at a time. It slows transfers down a bit, but not too badly.

Why don't you try CuteFtp?

I have the professional version and its works perfectly! I does multiple transfers, can have multiple ftp connections opened at the same time along w/ truck load of other features. You have to pay for the Professional version though.
