Win29 keep us updated

Ok, think i've been pretty patient, my client who has lost all domains however is not.
What is the latest update and eta please?

ETA is when done....when having to extract the backups it is a lot slower than the means we initially tried. sorry I can't be more specific at this time, I'd just be throwing numbers around without any meaning. I really thought initially 12 hours would be enough but it did not work out and moved along slower than I'd expected to get the software all setup, then the creation of the users/domains done.

BTW I updated just before you posted. :)

Yes, you got me on the draw.

Your last post quoted more than 50% done, so based on that i was hoping for something indicative, but if you cannot then you cannot and i can inform the client likewise.

cheers

that is true, it is actually over 65% done now, but truth be told this is not the best indicator as you can hit a single user that may have multiple 100,000 files and slow the entire process.

We are running using a mutlithreaded file copy app, and multiple copies of it, so it doesn't halt the restoration of other users, but it does 'hang' that batch for a while.

I tried to do block level restore from backup but it took 45 minutes on analysis before I decided this was not going anywhere if it took that long to analyze, in the end that may be a wasted 45 minutes, but it would have been worth it if all files could have restored in an hour or so. It wasn't meant to be :(

How can optimize it? There must be another way to recover a server in less time.

The issue began 20 hours before it has been solved. It is a long time !!! I think you must review your recover plan

In any case, thank you for your work

We have a multi phased approach, we have done many in less time, when it comes to pulling over the network for the backups that is the last option.

I tried the other much speedier options first. This isn't the optimal plan and we know that, and we'd prefer not to use it, but it is reliable and in the end that is what counts.

At the same time we are working on other things as well to increase recovery speed in disaster recovery area, but it is not ready at this time.

WHAT PERCENTAGE ARE WE AT PLEASE?
And this percentage are those lucky ones that have files restored and are back up and running?

somewhere around 80-85% right now. PM me the username will check it directly to see if it is going yet/done etc. Yes once restored they will be up and running as soon as permissions set which is within minutes now after files restored.

mentioned issue is fixed, there were 8 domains that had errors even in manual recreator run, we had to do a hosting service disable, and enable to get it back up for this user, and will do so for others as well that had that problem.

Fantastic, thank you Stephen. At least one of us can get some sleep now ;)

I have had a quick cat nap or two while file restores going here but true sleep won't be coming till I am not in my family's guest bedroom. As much as I love my family this bedroom is not a place I like that much but it is working to get the 'job' done here with reliable DSL anyway :D

Yes , it is important, but not less than the time that the website is down. This is far too long to recover a server, almost 24 hours
Equanimity,

I understand your frustrations but you have to realize when you go to copying on a file basis, large accounts increase the time greatly. you have a large account there I am sure you know, and it alone took a long time, and it is not the only large account by any means (not exactly by amount of data, but by amount of files that is important in speed of recovery)

As I said we are working on some other options here, that would be more self healing, but we cannot say too much yet.
