VPS really can't run live AV scanners, in fact I'd debate that servers should not run live AV scanners.
Real Time scanning is not something that should be on web servers, the best way to prevent virus on a server is to only run trusted apps, designed for servers, and limit all other activity.
Realtime scanning can and well:
1. cause state loss
2. cause session loss
3. cause asp.net recompiles when hitting and changing dates on file to scan
There are a number of other things they do as well but those are the biggies.

They say to run AV only on host node, which is what we do except with plesk there is an on demand AV interface to scan mail as well.
