Domain Alias Effects on Email

I'm shifting a customer's website to a new domain name and we'd like to have the old domain name become an ALIAS to the new domain.

My questions:

How will that affect email going to the old domain name?

Should I keep the old domain up for a while and just to a redirect to the new domain? Will this allow the old email addresses to work for a while?

What would be the best way to setup this situation where the customers would go to the new domain (which ever domain name they typed in) AND have the email addresses still functional with both domain names?

What you are interested in doing it called in hsphere a "mail domain alias" it is like a domain alias for hosting, except it makes email listen on both domains as well.
