DNS and Email Setup

I need some advise please.

When I first set up my VPS, I also setup a DNS server and logged this as my site nameservers with my domain registrar.

For my email I use Google and added a CName to my DNS server to point mail.mydomain.com to the google server (ghs.google.com).

This works great, except on the odd instance the VPS is down (yesterday for example). Then the mail service does not work as the DNS server is not available.

I have two questions:

1. is my approach of setting up a DNS server on the VPS correct or should I have done something different
2. is there anything I can do so that when the VPS is down my email still works

Please open support ticket with the VPS detail and domain name. There are few possibilities to prevent this in future. We will update you back on ticket about these possibilities.
