Joomla 1.5.23 Mail Settings

Any tips on setting up mail on Joomla on a Linux box.

I tried SMTP Auth with [email protected], password and server being mail.domain.com and it doesn't go through.

I'm sure I'm just missing something.

I've been using
PHP Mail Function
[email protected]
Sendmail: /usr/sbin/sendmail
SMTP Auth: No
Security: none
SMTP Host: localhost

for most of Joomla/Linux sites. It seems to work fine, though I only do mostly mail to admin.

The one site that does use SMTP works well, too.
SMTP Server
From: A real mailbox address on the domain
SMTP Auth: Yes
Security:none
SMTP Port: 587
username: a real mailbox address
password: whatever
smtp host: mail.mydomain.com

I've got quite a few customers using joomla as well
mail setup is
smtp auth
port 587
valid domain name mailbox account
password for mailbox
mail server mail.domainname
