Webshell Archive Function

Hello -

I'm wondering if anyone else has difficulty using the Archive function out of the webshell ftp. I am simply trying to create an archive of a set of site files, but it doesn't seem to do anything.

I select the directory, then click "Archive", select the compressed file type and name it, but when I click "Create" nothing happens, except occasionally the right side of the screen goes white, leaving only the files on the left side.

I can download them manually through Transmit, but it would be a lot easier if this worked.

Hello,

This happen sometimes when trying to archive bigger size of files and it (webshell archive utility) got timeout during compression, due to which it shows white screen at the right side. However, you can raise a support ticket with mention the domain name and the size of files you were trying to archive. We'll try to it from your and and will do the needful.

Apart form this if you need archive for webfiles then you can update us and we'll provide you archive of those files as well.

Yep I get the same problem all the time and even when it does work half the time the archives come down corrupted or files are missing within the archive. Unfortunately it's a huge hassle having to get support to do something you should be able to do yourself and have to wait for a 3rd party to do it.
My advice, save yourself the headaches and just ftp them down and archive them locally, it'll probably be quicker in the long run.

The alternative would be to make smaller archives because they won't take as long or be as large. Some people don't realize how any files their CMS and other systems generate, and how they can take 10+ minutes to complete zip, some even much longer than this, but a rare case.

I can vouch for the fact that a CMS can consume large amounts of space. I have a client with CMS/shopping cart, and I wanted to archive the site before I started an update, but couldn't. Turned out that there was over 140MB of jpeg files associated with the shopping cart alone. His total disk usage was at 85% of available space! I had to resort to FTP to back it up.

I've never had any problems using the Webshell archive utility for most sites as they are typically less than 20MB in total.

I wish I could say the same nzkiwi even some of the smaller archives I create on the server and download can get corrupted, of course I realise that alot of things can go wrong between the server and my machine when downloading them.

You're completely right about huge image files as most customers never optimise them and pretty much go from camera to website

I used to try this method all the time but support told me to do it the domain folder level, like I said now I just ftp them down as it's more reliable, unless of course it's joomla nearly 2000 files if I remember correctly :(

It also seems like I can't reliably upload through webshell either. 6.9M file, simply will not upload. I really limits the utility of this function if neither the archive utility or the upload function will reliably work.
