thanks
Tom

That is not something we can provide really, as DR is different for every service and server type. We have some written plans on it but nothing that we can share.

I thought as much.

Do you have any formal documentation with regards to backups etc that take place?

thanks for getting back to me stephen

I know your busy guys ... any updates?
This information has been posted here a few times throughout, but basically we keep 7 days of backups for disaster recovery purposes using imaging and file level backups, stored to multiple HD based network storage units.

My apologies for renewing an old thread, but I just had a client ask for a formal statement as well. I understand your backup procedures. Do you have a general time frame for disaster recovery? So for instance, a server crashes, what is the time frame for it to be replaced, restored, and running?

They are asking for this in a contract, and I'm concerned about putting anything in due to not having control over so many things: servers, backbone connection, restore procedures, etc..

Thanks for any response and suggestions you can offer,
-Ben

Hello Ben,
Sorry to be a 'pain' on this one, but I'd not set this in a contract unless it was a dedicated server.

There are many variables to disaster recovery timeframes depending on Windows, Linux, server types, etc.

Generally it is total server out and new server disaster to up it between 4-14 hours with 14 being the worst case in recent times(last 2 years) to my recollection.

It's funny you mention those items, that's very close to what I had stated to them. But since I don't control the servers, I needed another source of information before going back to them. As it stands I'm putting it at a "48 hours as best effort dictates" and putting in items to cover us for things out of our control (hurricane breaks data center, etc)..

Thanks for the help,
-Ben

I don't think you will ever have to worry about a hurricane effecting this data center: http://jodohost.com/whyus.asp. :D But I guess you never know.

Personally I don't have much concern about the datacenter in/during/after hurricanes. My concerns with the weather in south florida are more toward the people both staff ours and the guards and operation staff at the facility.

While one may come out of a major hurricane with their life and even may use the datacenter to help in that, much can be lost on a personal level that can impact their work, attitudes, and families.

The last 2 years the weather in SoFla has been good, almost too good, I know a bad year is coming soon I just don't wish to see it :(

I completely agree with your sentiments Stephen. But I'm sure you know as well as I do, most people won't think that way when their business site is down losing them money. On the good side, I can handle most any complaining customers, so it's not a big deal to me, but always nice to have at least a general idea when the questions arise.
