Web 15 down, yet again

bro

Perch
Web15 sites having problems again with connections and poor performance.

In all my time with JH, this server has been the most unreliable POS I've ever used with any of my sites. I already lost one customer because of multiple problems with slowness and erratic connections on this server, and the way it's going I'm likely to lose the rest. Please get it fixed permanently, and kick off those clients who abuse the system.

I'm tired of it as well. I've got one customer running a phpBB3 forum on the server, and the down time coupled with slow response time will force them to find another host if we can't get this fixed, or move the site to another server.

We are working on it, I don't have all the details to reply fully, but I am working on matters where I can (this is a bit outside of my realm)

I have a monitor I personally setup, to monitor web15, it hasn't had any issue since a little episode this morning for about 10 minutes.

My problems today certainly lasted more than 10 minutes. Sites were completely gone for periods longer than that, and it was painfully slow for a period of 2 hours or more. Even when it worked, Joomla admin pages were taking around a minute to load. In fact, I was able to completely download and re-install one site on a web13 account and it was loading perfectly from there (using the same mysql server) while the other one was still not performing satisfactorily. Perhaps the monitor is not reflecting 'real-life' use.

Hmm... wonder if this glitch is in anyway related to the poor performance I (sometimes) get with Web4 and Joomla?

Actually I now think it might be mysql8 again all along. I switched between the 2 identical sites today (web13/mysql8 and web15/mysql8 ) and noticed delays were comparable on both. When one worked well, so did the other, but they both appeared to slow down at the same time, too. So maybe yesterday it was just coincidental that it appeared to run differently on web13/15. (Web15 in fact appeared very slightly faster for the same page when both were working well.)
No time to look at it again now, though. Too many other things to fix...

Well, that didn't last long.... the private site I added on web13 was hacked for a phishing scam earlier today. The subdomain I created for it had never left my desktop, so I can only assume FTP traffic was sniffed.

I changed all the FTP passwords, and took a backup and updated a live Wordpress domain on the same account. An hour later I got an email from a security company saying that site too was being used for phishing. The hacker's backdoor admin page had been added within 30 minutes of updating the site, and the only FTP used there was directly from the in-built Wordpress backup facility on the site that uses FTP and goes direct to Wordpress.

Evey hack I've had seems to be through FTP, and it's taking up more and more unpaid time. Can we get secure FTP for Hshpere? SSH is available for it, is it not?

I can assure you FTP passwords are not being 'sniffed'

I don't have the logs to personally to check it all, but I know their isn't any sniffing going on in the network.

Are you using any plugins on WP?

This isn't an issue on our side, we've sent some logs of what is needed for you to investigate now.

Whatever the hacking situation, which we've talked about PM, I'm now fairly convinced the original problem with the web15 site is actually down to mysql8. It's been on and off slow to dead slow tonight, and switching the database used to mysql7 improved response times enormously. It seems the problems with that server have been going on for weeks.

Thanks for the update there. I am not seeing any high load on MySQL8 but will see if a unix tech can monitor it.

The phpBB forum my client runs on web15 is returning a lot of errors lately instead of forum pages. The mosts common is the following:

Error 324 (net::ERR_EMPTY_RESPONSE): The server closed the connection without sending any data.

This is very aggravating to the forum members. There also seems to be a lot of problems staying signed in to the forum. Anything I can do on forum to help avoid these issues, or is this a server problem?

Web15 is at it again. When will this server be replaced. SELDOM have I gone without trouble on web15. There are times of the day that it seems to just slow down.

Has anything ever been done about this?

Web14 is also acting poorly. I have sites on two different platforms on web14, both of which are taking 40+ seconds to load.

No, server is not down. Please update your domain name in ticket to check the real problem.
