A client just asked me, apart from disk space and traffic, how much “activity” a shared account could support. That is to say, how many users would be able to use an database-driven web site at any one time? Say for example a WordPress or DotNetNuke site?
What could I tell him, as a rough guide?
there’s no way to tell exactly, because it all depends on what is installed(add-ons) etc. I can tell you there are some busy WP and some busy DNN sites hosted, some get 20k+ visitors a day without a problem. I can also say there are soop portal sites running on SD servers that have 15-20 users on at a time and use a lot of bandwidth and CPU, and such would not work on normal shared server. However I think DNN handles multiple users much better than SOOP and its derivatives.
Thanks Stephen. WP uses a bit of caching to up its efficiency, not sure about DNN’s caching. But if I can say “1000’s” for a WP-like site that’s great. Depends on the application of course.
Sounds like SOOP is a bowl of soup if it taxes a server with 20 users, classic ASP or not. Wow.
