OK, I am really annoyed with DSPAM lately, marking a lot of my legitimate newsletter I receive as SPAM. Please, can’t we have an email address we can just forward these to so they can be whitelisted? I have asked before with no response…
Today’s gripe,
I am setting up a newsletter for a client, using a 3rd party email company ( http://www.aweber.com ) and I get the following DSPAM rejection when I test it:
7.0 DSPAM_SPAM “dspam marked spam”
0.0 HS_INDEX_PARAM URI: Link contains a common tracker pattern.
0.0 HTML_MESSAGE BODY: HTML included in message
1.1 AWL AWL: From: address is in the auto white-list
It seems to me that the AWL would override the DSPAM, right?
You can always send us headers of legit mails via ticket which are treated as spam by DSPAM,we will use these headers to train DSPAM but please note that we do this only on weekends.
I am also plagued by false positives, and confusion of myself and my clients. Please, someone from Jodo take some time to spell things out for us in detail??
What is the relationship between SpamAssasin and DSPAM? I am now sometimes receiving messages marked as SPAM that have NO reference to DSPAM in the headers or text of the spam notice. I have also received some messages where SpamAssasin seems to be using DSPAM’s analysis as the primary scanner, and then also SpamAssasin as a second layer. Is this right? Are our control Panel setting affecting BOTH of these filters?
When I receive a message marked as spam, the message is attached as a “.txt” file. WHY? Can it be attached as a simple forwarded email message that Outlook (or other programs) would open directly and with all the bells and whistles? As it is, (for an html message) if i want to see it normally, i need to drag the attachment to my desktop, rename it, change the extension to “.eml” and then it will open in Outlook Express (only, not Outlook, even if i use the extension .msg).
I, too would love a simple email address where we could forward all “false positive” spam notices, complete with all attachments and headers. This seems like the logical method. Short of that, [COLOR=“Red”]please tell us EXACTLY what to do and how when we receive a false positive spam detection message, and we want DSPAM to be trained accordingly.
The common answer that “we train DSPAM on the weekends” seems rather casual and unresponsive to me. Sometimes DSPAM seems to be WAY off in the weeds, even flagging the current DATE and DAY OF WEEK when it appears in message headers. It seems that it needs very frequent training, and probably some human common sense involved in tweaking the DSPAM filters. Can more be done about this, and more often?
I’m sorry you are frustrated with me. We all have bad days. I now realize that the ticket answer has been given elsewhere, i wanted to know if that was the only answer, and I wanted to do it right. (The answer in THIS thread was being written at the same time as my post, forgive me for not seeing it in the future.) Just for clarification, if I forward to the ticket system the spamassassin-marked email with the “original message before SpamAssassin.txt” attachment in tact, that is the best and prefered way for you?
I guess you didnt like my other 3 questions either, so I will go on making assumptions and hope magic handles all future issues ratrher than trying to understand and help my clients understand.
We donot train all newsletters provided to us or we will soon end up with polluted dspam database.
Please prefer to whitelist such senders as their sender addresses don’t change or have identifiable patterns.
dspam is a bayesian filter that runs on a separate server and is trained on weekends.
It adds some extra headers to each message that passes through it.
Spamassassin runs on our mailservers and always have an updated copy of its official ruleset.
Apart from these standard rules, spamassassin also give a very high score to any email that has been considered as spam by dspam. This is the only relation between the two.
I hope you are not using Anti-spam filter for Oulook from Microsoft that uses their smartscreen technology?
The relation between the two has been explained above. Control panel only affects spamassassin, as it doesn’t support dspam.
While launching dspam, we kept spamassassin intact so that you retain required control over your anti-spam settings.
And if you don’t like dspam, you can opt out of it without completely giving up any kind of spam protection.
Not possible. Idea behind it is that the message may contain malacious code/javascript that may execute right when you view the message. So it is much secure for you to extract the message you know are going to be clean.
.msg is a propritory binary format from Microsoft, while “.eml” is plain text.
Probably you have default application for “.eml” set to Outlook Express (that also happens to be the default setting unless set otherwise).
Bayesian filtering is best done at user level, but that means enormous amount of resources that isn’t feasible with shared hosting.
This is where you can make use of whitelist/blacklist available in control panel and in a few days you will have all smooth communication.
It is not possible to train it every day because the way the software stores this data and the amount of data generated per anti-spam gateway, it make dspam filtering to dead slow and causes big amount of delay in emails.
Entirely my mistake. I browsed forum without logging in and thought of responding to your post before shift end.
However it was read and didn’t appeared in my list of latest posts(probably vB stored this post as read in my browser cookies), and I forgot to reply.
Go ahead and send those. Stephen, this file do contain dspam signature.
