If I have several AVI’s (DivX) or MOV’s. I used this format because they came out much smaller and better quality than WMV’s.
I know I go to many sites where I click on a DivX or MOV file and they almost automatically start playing… after a small buffer… and continue top play to the end.
How do I get the same. I know there is such a thing as streaming server software and most hosts don’t have that. What can I do to get that simulated effect though? Right now if I click on one of the movies it may open up Media Player, but it has to pull the whole thing down first.

Well… I was able to create a Windows Media 9 (WMV) video which I could get as small as DIVX and as nice looking and it does seem to do web streaming. Is there a way to get a normal DIVX AVI or .MOV to act the same was as the WMV file does. When I click on the link, media player loads and then you see it buffering. That’s what I would like a DIVX or MOV file do.

I remember trying really hard to get simulated streaming with AVIs. In the end, I ended up converting to either FLV (Flash video) or RM (RealMedia) to get them to stream.
I don’t have a lot of experience with video MOV files but I have worked with VR (virtual reality) MOV files a bunch. With those, I can embed a preview track that begins playing immediately, with the final quality showing up as it’s downloaded. Perhaps it’s just the authoring software you’re using that doesn’t provide the preview track capability? Or, maybe that isn’t doable with video?
