Backups on semi-dedicated machine

I just got the word that backups on winsd1 where not available. I need to recuperate some files and the support staff told me that the backups have been “corrupted” and that older backups where not available either. That is the kind of answer that gets people fired in my company. I need a solution here, not excuses…

Not a really happy customer

We are aware of this situation.
Trust me, I am treating this very very seriously.

WinSD1 is located in a different datacenter and a slightly different backup routine was followed on it. There has been miscommunication that resulted in a loss of our secondary set of backups for this server.

We are in the process of rectifying it

All this is fine, but what do I say to my client?

Do I just say Hey, I am sorry but you just lost your files and there is nothing I can do about ?

Are we sure that all backups have been deleted?

What assurance do we have that this will not repeat itself?

Is the data backed up now?

What will I do when the client sues me for lost of data?

They are not deleted, we have no recoverable set of your files :frowning:

To be very honest.. there was a major miscommunication between us and another company with regards to a backup system we are using at that datacenter.

Myself and Stephen are right now chalking out how to prevent such a scenario from ever happening again

Humm. You’re not helping me cope with my (very mad) client. Let me resume the situation:

Jodohost was supposed to make backups.
Backups were made but are unreadable (therefore useless).
I bought this service from Jodohost on behalf of my client with the written assurance that backups would be provided.

Seems to me that my client should be intitled to something since he is not getting what he paid for…

Backups were made to a server that we paid for, that server went down last Friday with no notice and was formatted. I have been scrambling since then to get a backup hard drive in place, ordered, shipped, and installed.

This is very unfortunate timing and only the 2nd request to restore anything over the whole of the winsd1 time period.
We have been making backups using another method, and they were not working because of too little space on the destination.

We have now changed the backups to backup to our normal server, using other, slower but very reliable means. From now on we will have the backups, even if they have to process longer each day to get them.

You can submit a request to billing for this if you wish.

Hi Stephen,

Thanks for your efforts and your explanations. The situation is clearer for me now. I really appreciate the time you put in what I appreciate less is the misinformation I was given by the support staff. I had to extract information piece by piece and after 17 hours of posting tickets, I was finally told that backups were unavailable. Then yesterday, Yogesh told me that the semi-dedicated plan did not include backups! So you see, a lot of confusion. Furthermore, I am left with having to explain to a very mad client an unacceptable situation. You guys need to make a gesture to help me with this client…
