Way off topic for a hosting forum, sorry. Is there a way to connect a USB web cam to Ethernet without a PC? I want to set up a bird cam and I’m too cheap to spring for an IP netcam or wireless cam. I want to put the camera a couple hundred feet from the PC (that’s where the birds are!).
take this and get a NEMA approved waterproof electrical box for the connector, of if you need the whole USB camera enclosed consider making a plexiglass structure with a grommet/firewall for the cat5 cable to exit
I kept searching on terms like USB ethernet adapter/converter and was finding only dongles. “USB extender” was what I should have been searching for.
I found a cheap USB extender at http://www.cross-mark.com/rj45-extension-adapter-p-742.html?cPath=30 But considering cables, you’re probably right that it will probably be just as cheap to buy a wireless web cam. It will certainly be easier and less dangerous than having a network cable stretched across the yard. (I can see my kids tripping on that every day!)
That USB to fiber extender is waaay outside my budget! 8o
