Copying files between servers

Just wondering if there’s a way to copy files directly between servers, on your internal network instead of via http? I tried writing a little “download” program to get a file via http from another server, but it took ages… there must be a http speed throttle in place or something? It was between clusters if that matters. Haven’t tried it within the same cluster.

If there was a way to go via the file system instead, that would be awesome.
Or I guess I can ask support to copy it, but that might take even longer.. Just kidding.

Is it possible at all? I’m not hopeful, but just thought I’d ask.

between clusters will be anywhere from 600KB/s to 6MB/s from my experience.
we don’t have any sort of throttles but the miami side does seem to stop about 600KB/s(sometimes 1.3MB/s), you have to multi thread the download to get more. It isn’t anything we’ve done and in fact slows us down :frowning:

inside the same cluster, especially the Texas one, I’ve seen 90MB/s multiple times

We don’t have any special path between the datacenters, as they won’t be long term linked, we have one common provider between them now but they don’t yet have fiber between the two, and not sure they will when we leave miami we are their biggest client and will be gone from there

Thanks Stephen. Ok, I’ll get support to do the copy instead of using a http get. Don’t want to slow anything down!

Speaking of being gone, I don’t know what we’ll do if you ever leave Jodo, you seem to be the go-to guy for just about everything. Hope they’re paying you well and the coffee is good.

Atul lets me stock it with what I want, Kona right now

Hmm.. I tried using the “support method” but it’s resulted in some confusion.

Can you please talk to the support crew and ask them not to do anything which isn’t specifically requested - if they’re unsure, just ask the client for clarification. I asked them to copy a zip file across from one server to another, it was 700mb. There was some confusion about where it was to be copied to, that’s ok.. BUT.. the latest reply was:

We have copied web files in account root "D:\hshome\asainc" as requested. I also tried to unzip files but there is not much space in FTP for that. Kindly check the same.

Woah. I didn’t ask them to unzip the file. They don’t know whether I want it unzipped, or where. That’s not the right thing to do, unless specifically requested.

Please tell them that if they’re not sure about something, they simply need to ask. Asking is much better than doing something the client didn’t intend. If they had unzipped that 700mb of stuff in the web root it would have been disastrous.

Hello Antic

On behalf of our support team I would like to apologize for this one…you are absolutely right in saying “Asking is much better than doing something the client didn’t intend”

Be rest assured that we try to help all our clients and the guys might have just take that a bit further by trying to unzip for you, but you did not ask for this and we’ll ensure that they do as requested.

No worries Pratik, thanks for that. No harm done but I thought it was worth raising.

You guys all do an excellent job, no doubts about that, apologies if it sounded like I was generalising. There’s very rarely any problems with support.. your team have always been very quick and friendly. :thumb:

Our pleasure mate…

have a nice evening

Cheers

Thanks for handling this Pratik.

Pratik has rejoined our team this week after some years away. We welcome him back and look forward to great progress going forward!

That’s very forward-thinking of you.

Welcome back Pratik, good to see you on the forums again!

Sigh.. actually it seems he DID unzip it - into the web root folder.

Bad support person. No easter eggs for you.

:frowning: DO we need to do a restore here?

Thanks but it’s ok, I’ve sorted it out now. :typing:
