I am going to use this thread to announce some changes coming in the near future. I am not able to yet discuss all of the details as some are changing a bit in the testing and move to production status but there are some good things coming soon.

Windows 2008 available for clients usage, on virtual dedicated platform, powered by HyperV

All Coldfusion servers will be moving a cloud platform that is virtualized, there will be a substantial increase in the ‘number’ of servers, likely with less RAM than a hardware server (4GB+ on all servers), but they will be running a small amount of sites in virtual setup so that do not have as bad of an impact with ODBC crashes that are so frequent on CF servers.

Keep a watch here for more details if you want to know before the public :slight_smile:

Edit to add: This is not free to be shared publicly yet, only to people here in this forum. We would like customers to know what is going on first, and when we open sales be aware and ready to go if they wish to do so before others have the chance. We will make a public announcement at the point they are deployed and ready to accept clients on them.

We have the servers ready but working on the automation of it, is not going that well. I think I finally have the missing link now and working on getting that up, we are looking at early next week launch!

I’ve done a lot of 2003 automated installs, but 2008 is different, I have it working on a real machine but making it work to set IPs, customer password, etc is a bit different, and almost there. A lot of trial and error, until I finally got the file that makes the automation work on microsoft forums. (We will be using WebSitePanel for automation of it, and the download was not working right, it is now)

now I know will be a number of questions on the plans and why we have both.

VZ is great for many purposes, for hosting it is excellent.
It has cheaper Plesk for control panel(Hyper-V bills like dedicated server)

It also has a template filesystem, so you get about 29.5GB of 30Gb for instance, usable disk space.

Hyper-V has a full install taking away about 20GB of the disk space right off the top.

virtuozzo plans have external SQL Server access, Hyper-V plans do not, we will be adding that as an addon shortly.

Virtuozzo support tickets for us to do tasks are a bit cheaper at $3 per issue(as long as not taking 15+ minutes)

Hyper-V support tasks are $20 minimum, 30 minutes billed, and we offer addon support plans for them as well that will reduce that if you would like.

Differences in them:
Virtuozzo has less IO overheard due to the template OS, and no hardware emulation.

Hyper-V has hardware emulation, but requires a full windows install, it also allows a custom sized swap file (virtuozzo is pegged to amount of RAM only).

Virtuozzo doesn’t allow kernel modules for VPN clients, live anti virus, etc, Hyper-V does allow them.

Virtuozzo Windows updates are handled by the node, and if you install on own will have problems, Hyper-V is 100% by YOU, we do not provide Windows Updates outside of a support contract.

Virtuozzo has a built in control panel that does a lot more, allowing off server backups to be taken on demand, Hyper-V does the basics like on and off. With Hyper-V currently you will need a support plan for backups to be taken by us, in the near future we will be adding SAN and iSCSI addons for you to mount a backup point within your Hyper-V.
