I feel your pain, Stephen. Raptors seem far too prone to failure in our experience as well.
Fortunately, the other “Enterprise Class” WD SATA drives, the RE4 series, don’t seem to have such spectacularly high failure rates, at least so far. We’ve also had good luck with the Seagate Constellation drives as well; time will tell, however, if these respective series can manage to outlast the Raptors they replaced.

The Velociratpors we’ve got quite a large amount in operation, but not having huge issues, but wow when both go dead within a short time it is frustrating. Part of it could be said to be my fault for buying them at the same time and putting in RAID, but at the same time, you should be able to do that.
The speed of them is good, and that is why we had them of course, the SQL servers benefit from the velociraptor quite a bit.
The BEST drives I’ve had are Samsung on the SATA RAID front, and fujitsu on the SAS/SCSI.
