how can we compete

hey folks

I have a prospective new client, who will be placing a large amount of media files - so this is going to be a big account.

my issue is price… godaddy charges $7 for 100GB or something like that (all i need for now is 3GB), but we as resellers cant get anywhere close to asking for that from a client.

believe me, i know the added value of the great support we have here, but the end user doesnt understand that, and if he had the choice, would obviously choose to pay $7/m than $20-$40/m for much less space.

is there anything that can be done about this? I dont like sending clients to godaddy, but with this big fish, and other big fish in the future - it seems i dont have much choice :frowning:

any comments?

Thanks!

Talk to your potential client about the concept of overselling.

I’ve never used GoDaddy for hosting, so I wouldn’t want to say they use overselling as a business model, but most hosting companies with similar plans do.

Thats old news - you know how much overselling resellers do at Jodo?

It might be old news, but it might be new news to your client.

Do you know if GoDaddy oversells? Do you know if GoDaddy makes an effort to squeeze a client out if they actually use the stated plan amount? GoDaddy very well may be overselling, using it as a business model, but they very well might back it up as well. It’s easy to move a heavy user off a busy server and on to a server more suited to the users activity.

Or, maybe you’re just trying to squeeze a little more out of Jodo?

Out of the many different types of hosting customers out there, very few are looking for huge quantities of disk space and bandwidth.

Huge amounts of space are usually Warez,Gamers or people that think WOW all that space for that amount and don’t know better and only need just a little then get horrible service.

Not to mention if they actually use the space their account will get mysteriously terminated

Not hardly… just trying to be able to stay in the game and make a few bucks.

Yash - you’re most probably right, but i have an issue recommending clients pay (me) more, when they can pay significantly less, for more.

WDS, Stephen - you;re probably right. Who is going to use 100GB of space anyway - me nor my clients wont get near there, and if they do - i’ll have them on a dedicated long before that.
But its the principal: for example, most of my client sites, are on the basic 200MB plan, which is fine for a small to medium sized site. For a media site, obviously more space will be needed (like +/- 3 GB for the client i mentioned above). And thats probably way within the (publicized or not) limits that Godddy will give you.

Believe me all, i’m not rushing over. Admins, you know i have been around for a good few years already - and the main advantages for me are - 1) the amazing personal support level, and 2) the relatively good prices, in relation to most (non-godaddy) hosts.
As a developer, support for me is really mission critical, and i am willing to pay (and am paying) more for that. My question is just for the clients i guess… they’re always trying to save a few bucks  aren’t we all…

You need not to send your prospects to anywhere else, rather your efforts should be in directions to let him experience your services (May be a short-term trial).

You said he will be placing lots of media files. Well, if he has this kind of LEGAL stuff, he would be earning enough revenue to run his business site with high uptime. In that case he can consider you Personalised Services at a premium. You already know that big hosts don’t have this Personalised Hosting advantage that you have.

$7 for 100GB doesn’t make economic sense and this model is not sustainable.

I would recommand you to do some research on Cost vs Benefit analysis for these kind of hostings and give your prospects a chance to understand the pricing game.

Thanks Ravi, i hear you.
This media client is just an example of course (and yes - its all lectures he has given himself) - but no matter how much I understand the pricing game, if he thinks i am trying to take him for a ride, it doesnt matter how much i have read into the subject…

I have noticed several other hosting companies ( www.webhost4life.com for example) which have in the last year or so immensely increased their offerings (from 200MB to 2 GB for a personal $10/mo acct). I disagree that they would bump me just for using what they offer.

I have a client who is going to be using a lot of bandwidth and space – he is an appraiser, and has to upload/download lots of high quality photos for clients. I have been struggling with this, but in the end, I am just going to charge him a little more than most, but less, maybe than I should. Most my work for him is web design, so I am OK losing a little $$$ on hosting. The reality, however, is few of my other accounts use their allotted disk space, so by overselling my disk space, I just might get away with it.

I would rather lose a little money on hosting, knowing that I could make it up in 1/2 hour of design work…

In the end, my partners and I have agreed that we want to keep our clients with Jodo becuase we know that we get fast response to questions – on the furums, and cerebus, and live chat. And also, the service we get is very good. Are their things we are less than excited about (blacklisting, spam, server space to name a few)? Yes. But the fact that we get such good response when we have problems helps alleviate those issues, a bit…
