How many websites per server?

I know that JH does not set a static number of websites they allow on a server. They go by actual utilization when deciding if a server is at capacity.

It seems that some time ago there used to be only around 250 websites on a server. Now I’m seeing more like 700 to 900. Has there been an increase in the pure number of websites on a server? And if so, I assume there are a lot of websites that simply don’t use many resources.

I’m just curious. I know it always looked good when we saw only 250 websites on a JH server compared to other hosts that were showing 900+.

JH have said on average its 300 per a P4 (HT)

and around 1000 for a 2x Xeon

but as you said it depends on the websites on the server but thats around the figure they use.

ive seen hosts check 5000 domains on a server, i’d say JH put the level just right

Ah yes. That makes sense. I wasn’t taking into account that they have much faster/newer hardware these days. Makes perfect sense to me now. Guess that’s why I asked. :]

Not only faster hardware but services are clustered. That means while each web server may host a higher # of sites; database, email & DNS are all hosted on other servers. Conventionally a webhost would host all of them on the same server

you cant set a certen number of sites can you?

am on win5, and if i add a new domain name now, it wont appear on Win10, it’ll go on win5… meaning the Win5 site count increases, right?

I am not JH so I am only speculating here, but it seems as you are correct. If a bunch of current customers on win5 start adding many-many websites the list of sites on win5 grows. This is something that JH probably has to monitor.

Maybe they take that into consideration when deciding when to stop adding accounts to a server. They leave a “buffer” zone. Fill it 60% full then stop adding new accounts and allow those accounts that are on the server to grow another 40%.

Scotty, no we can’t set a permanent number, customers accoutns willcontinue adding to the server they were on originally, that is why we turn them off prior to the point they are full, so they stil have some growing room.
