Actually, I use HSphere Assist. The guy who does it provides good support and is willing to work with you for customized stuff. His auto-update puts new releases directly into a pre-authorized folder for which you provide him a limited FTP account.
If you rely on PSoft’s documentation, which is probably some of the ugliest around, then Assist is miles better.
My personal opinion is that HSphere is not unreasonably priced. The authoring package is Macromedia’s Robohelp and it’s an extremely expensive hunk of software. There’s also a lot of work to port PSoft’s doc’n into the package, develop the templates, etc.
That said, the product isn’t perfect. The guy providing the service isn’t a tech writer and what he’s essentially done is just repackage the PSoft doc’n. He hasn’t really done much, if anything, to improve the basic quality of the text, which is among the worst I’ve ever seen.
As a tech writer myself, I’ve often thought I’d rewrite the HSphere stuff. But there is one humongous amount of content there. Fixing it initially would take months of work and then maintaining it in light of HSphere’s release schedule could be punishing. Given the limited market, it’s probably not worth the effort.
