There are a ton of ways to do this (although it seems to change almost on a monthly basis). You mentioned the links issue. Definitely put a link on a forum that is being googled (like JH)…that REALLY helps.
Also I read that blogs really seem to be helping lately as well.
Maybe just start a blog regarding and everyone who participates has a blog of their own which is all interlinked. That would really help provided you don’t do any tricks to get banned.

Yeah I’ve noticed some of the good developers with kick ass page rank have sites that blog. Anyone have any clue how a blog works? Is there a preferred application for it? I’ve been to blogger.com but I don’t get exactly how it works.
