About scammers and spammers

I had a client sign up for hosting..within two days they were using scripts (php) to send out Phishing types of emails. As soon as I was made aware of it..I deleted their account immediately. Sorry… but it sux that people can’t do things in a legitimate way. X( I am at least happy that someone let me know about it before it got worse.

Does anyone have any advice on how to detect these types of situations? Not sure how long it would have taken to find out..if someone hadn’t forwarded me the email they received.

:frowning:

We offer a service by MaxMind in the CP that can help SOME, but it is not ever 100%, beware any signups from free email addresses(but do not exclude, IMO).

IS MaxMind in the reseller control panel? If it is where is is located? Thanks

Yes it is there, 3rd Party Tools, Hsphere Templates, Fraud Check.

What it will do it give a score in moderation on every signup, you can then check many variables given by the customer for validity.

Thanks for the replies guys,

Ar least in this case the client used an AOL email address..don’t know if it was legitimate or not..and passed the fraud tests with 2CO.

I believe Stephen is right on in that some of what might be able to be put in place could never be 100% at preventing and stopping these idiots from trying certain things.

When I cancelled their account through 2CO I did so without issuing a refund..somehow I don’t believe they will come looking for one. The $13.95 that was charged doesn’t even begin to cover my time for straightening this out!

If people think it is appropriate I can post the email address they used to maybe prevent others from being duped.

they’ll probably use a different email every time anyways.

I think you should refund the money as it’s most probably a stolen card.

Yes, very good chance the card is stolen as well.
The problem is that you don’t know sometimes for a month or two, when people get their CC statements and freak out.

Good advice guys..I did issue a refund through 2CO..just to be on the safe side. I also commented about the illegal activity within the notes for refunding the sale.

The IP address as well as the email address both checked out to be AOL..although I know that doesn’t mean much really.

The first part of the fraud test passed when the order was originally placed. I figured that was as close as I was going to get to thinking it was legitimate.

The way i use reselling through Jodo is different than many of you. I mostly use it for design clients to give them 1-stop shopping. I do not look to advertise as hosting really..it’s very rare that someone signs up through me outside of my design clients.

Like InTheMarket, I use my reseller plan predominantly for my design clients. I have all my plans set as check or paypal only. I don’t offer credit card payments. Also, all my plans are set to moderate on signup.

This is definitely a barrier to those finding my hosting services and just signing up. But, I’ve found that every one of those requests for service have been fraudulent. So, I don’t much care. (Truthfully, I’ve had only a few, maybe one or two a quarter.)

The pure hosting I do is via word of mouth from clients, friends, etc. I create those accounts myself and then work out the billing via PayPal or check.

Tim

Hey Tim..small world! I just noticed you are in Rochester (me too..Greece to be exact!)

This is one of my sites:

I am changing the way I will accept anyone that stumbles on my hosting site. Unless I am manually signing up one of my design clients..I will not accept any other clients without a phone verification first. Just as Tim it is rare that I get any of those..but if I do they will not get by me without some intense scrutiny first.

Small world indeed! I’m in Fairport.
