If my client is running a private mailserver, can I setup the relay server at JH as a secondary backup and store emails in case my client private mailserver (primary) is down and reroute back to it when it is online again?
I know it works if the primary mailserver is also a JH mailserver. But for my case, is it possible to route to an external mailserver? Maybe the H-sphere can’t do it.. but any special setup can be done?
so i add a custom mx record (10) for my private mailserver. then add a (30) mx record for the relay server at JH. But which relay server that i should use? mail, mail2, mail3, mail4?
i tried enabling the Mail service then turn on the Mail relay and i saw 2 entries in the default MX records one being (10) and the other (30). So i believe the (30) is the relay server been assigned to the primary server. So then i proceed adding a custom MX record with (10) priority and then remove the default MX record for (10). But as soon as i remove the default MX record (10), both entries, the (10) and (30) at the default is gone. So i only left with a custom MX record (10) pointing to my private mailserver.
Where is the relay server entries now? Can i just add the earlier relay server MX record into the custom MX record area and set it (30). will this work?
I would just put your server on a prioirty 5 so it goes there first and leave ours behind to catch mail if yours goes down.
The hpshere “mail relay” is not what you are thinking so much, the main server if a new domain would be mail5, if you want to know what email server a domain is on you can check the DNS config to see what CNAME it is pointing to.
