For over two decades, the JodoHost community has been where customers ask questions, share solutions, and discuss hosting technologies.
During that time, we’ve used three different forum platforms.
- vBulletin
- XenForo
- Discourse
Each platform served us well. As our community and expectations evolved, so did the software behind it.
Recently, we completed our migration from XenForo to Discourse.
Rather than writing a detailed technical tutorial, we wanted to share some lessons from running a production forum migration.
Why We Chose Discourse
XenForo had been a reliable platform for many years.
Our decision wasn’t driven by problems with XenForo. Instead, we wanted a platform that offered:
- Modern and responsive user experience
- Excellent full-text search
- Active open-source development
- Better long-term maintainability
- Rich API ecosystem
- Simple mobile experience
Discourse checked all of those boxes.
Migration Isn’t Just About Data
Importing the database turned out to be one of the easier parts.
The real work was making sure the migration felt invisible to our community.
That meant paying close attention to:
- User accounts
- Password migration
- Attachments
- Avatars
- Categories
- Search indexes
- SEO
- Legacy URL redirects
A successful migration is one that users barely notice.
Preserve Existing URLs
One of our highest priorities was protecting search engine rankings.
Over the years, thousands of JodoHost forum pages had been indexed by Google and linked from blogs, support articles, and customer websites.
Breaking those URLs wasn’t an option.
We invested significant effort implementing permanent redirects so that legacy XenForo links continue to point visitors to the correct Discourse topics.
That work continues to pay dividends after launch.
Test Before You Cut Over
We performed multiple test imports before migrating the production forum.
Each test helped uncover small issues that are difficult to predict beforehand.
Examples included:
- Attachment locations
- Importer dependencies
- Search indexing
- Theme adjustments
- Redirect validation
Every rehearsal reduced the risk during the final migration.
Expect Post-Migration Tasks
Once the import completed, there was still work to do.
Some of the important post-migration activities included:
- Rebuilding the search index
- Rebaking imported posts
- Verifying attachments
- Validating redirects
- Updating Google Search Console
- Reviewing theme customization
- Monitoring logs
Migration isn’t finished when the import script ends.
Lessons Learned
A few things stood out during the project.
- Test more than once.
- Keep the old forum available until validation is complete.
- Preserve legacy URLs whenever possible.
- Search indexing deserves its own migration checklist.
- Theme customization helps returning users feel at home.
- Plan for several days of validation after launch.
Looking Ahead
The migration also gave us an opportunity to modernize the community experience.
We’re already working on improvements including:
- Community statistics
- Better navigation
- Enhanced search
- Additional knowledge resources
- Continued performance improvements
