Need very quick discussion - Customers please join in

Ok, here is the bad situation:
We have the data for April 13 and i can bring the server live with it anytime.
Beyond this any newer mail data is not available, however I’ve planned to work another 24 hours to get as much as possible here with those dead drives
.
Point to be noted here, if i bring the mail-server up right now:

  1. All mails from April13th will be downloaded again (if you download).
  2. Any deleted/downloaded mails "may re-appear in next 24 hours(so if possible do not download/delete mails in this time frame).

Please let us know your points here real quick so we can have some idea on how comfortable the customers will be with this move.
This seems to be only good option at the moment, apart from annoying re-download of mails, etc as it will make mail-service available for use.

Tanmaya, I’ve not sure I understand you correctly. Are you saying that you have all our emails, (and none have been lost since yesterday) and that you can re-start the server but we will have to download all emails since April 13th?

If so, that is fine by me. In our office, we are just dying to get our recent emails and send out today’s ones.

No, very sorry , but we have none of your recent mails. The lastest mail you can find will be the ones dated April 13 or earlier

I do hope you are kidding.

Nathan,

We have the drives here, and are working to restore data from them as we stated.

We are going ahead with bringing the server online, if you delete email it may re-appear while resynced again.

If the server went live again now with 13th mail. I’m sure users wouldnt mind about deleting stuff again, its the mail 13th-20th thats important.

So, server go live now, and if you spend more time trying to recover mails then if and when you do, cant you insert them into peoples mail boxes so as to bring up to date? A long process i know, but still.

I do think its quite bad that the latest backups of the mail are 7 days old however.

But thanks for your hard work.

bored,

we have been using sector based backups, and it seems that the same sectors causing the drives to offline today cause the backups to lock too :frowning:

We had backups from the 19th, but they had bad sectors as well when restoring certain data.

We are working on the drives directly, and we are making slow progress.

If I understand correctly by the times in the outages forum:

EMAIL1 went down yesterday.

So if you use an offline email client then we would’ve gotten new emails up to that point. (And the restore will cause older emails to be resent)

Webased users will have lost all mail in their account between the 2 dates you gave. While they might have read them up to that point all records of them are gone.

Andy

we HAVE to get that email back. we have a lot of angry customers that lost a lot of email. It’s completely unacceptable that the most recent backups are a week old.

If these emails can’t be recovered, Jodohost can count on some litigation from my clients, as there is a lot of invaluable information in those emails. And I would imagine they wouldn’t be the only ones…

Andy, it indeed went down at almost 1:00 AM EDT and you are right with the points stated for about the restore.

can’t sue for that.

true, it would be hard. seems like anybody sues anybody anymore though…sux that it’s that way.

FYI, recovery is successfully done:
