To frame my response: Most of my biz is web development and I offer hosting to my clients as a value-add. I have just a few strictly hosting clients. My clients all know that I’m a one man shop.
The question I get most often is whether I have my own servers. I tell clients that I retain the services of a hosting management company. I tell them that this company manages the servers, network connections, and security, and has staff on 24/7 to monitor for troubles, etc. I tell them that I do all the site management, development, and billing.
I point out advantages that this arrangement provides–like being able to provide multiple servers so that mail, database, and web are on separate boxes and if one goes down the others stay up.
My clients seem to find this reassuring–they know I’m not just running a server in a spare bedroom over a cable modem line; they know that someone trained and skilled in server/network management is keeping an eye on systems and security; they know someone is there 24/7; etc. I’ve had a few switch to hosting with me from companies who were running their own servers and tell me that I provide better service.
Like I said, I’m not trying to pass myself off as OneStopMegaHosting.com so your mileage may vary.
