Regularly, my sites get set to zero disk quota. On any of the Windows servers, this typically requires a ticket to reset to the plan’s quota. On Linux, I can often reset them myself. Either way, this is a pain. I don’t know about it until a customer complains. Typically, they can’t upload files, web stats stop being collected, some CMSes fail, sometimes the site goes completely offline. Unfortunately, with some of my low-volume sites it can be months before someone notices. No matter what, I have to face the heat as to why “my” system has failed.
I repeatedly file tickets about this. Each time, I ask for this to be solved once & for all. Each time, I get a terse “problem fixed, please check” response which translates to “we reset the quota on this account but didn’t do anything to fix the overall problem, you’ll have it again in a week or two”
Sorry to bitch in public like this. I’m a fan and recommend JH regularly, even though my hosting biz is largely non-existent nowadays. I’ve been a customer for years. But the tickets are getting me nowhere.
Can someone please fix this issue permanently? I’d even take an automated weekly scan for site problems & report by email so I could be a bit more proactive for my customers.
BTW on the windows side, it simply means the hsphere crashed, and needs to be restarted the problem is sometimes it will crash again. We don’t actually DO anything. There is no fix as the hsphere just uses memory and cpu till it consumes itself, there is a bug there yes, but that is the only way it doesn’t show on windows.
Actually we use a few things still not supported by Hsphere. Quota is something we are ready to take extra support overhead on, to offer slight better performance that our changes offer. I’ll see if we can automate these checks. However, I think quota issues for Linux must be limited to new servers recently?
Ah, Hsphere bugs rear their ugly head again. It’s a good system from a user standpoint. It’s too bad it’s not better supported/developed. I’d love to see custom reports or at least greatly expanded selection of reports. I know the data is in there. I just can’t get at it! Last I knew, their API was a non-starter (not that I’d have time to write some reporting system that used their API…)
For Windows, could you do some mem use monitoring and kick Hsphere automatically when it gets close to maxing out? Or, do a periodic automatic restart? Just a thought to help prevent these sorts of issues.
As always, thanks to you both. And again, sorry to raise this issue here in the forums.
Tim
PS: Exalted code master is overstating my skills by a lot! But thanks for restoring my cred. I checked my profile…I’ve been with you since 2005. Wow!
Windows, the quota is not controlled by Hsphere, so all it doe sit make the CP slow loading. The quota does NOT reset or otherwise make FTP or any setting to 0 and cause problem to IIS itself.
So on the win side I’d call it more of a CP side annoyance, than a bug, the real bug is in the memory gulfing hpshere.exe, and killing it just makes it gobble faster next time it starts.
As for that suggestion yes, it is set to auto restart 3 times, but after that we have to do it manually.
