Regarding new Mail security add-on

Hi

Received the email regarding the new paid service - Enterprise Class Mail Security, Windows Hosting

Can you explain what it does with suspected spam? it wasnt clear to me if it sends it on to the user (eg, outlook), just with SPAM in the subject line, or whether the users needs to login to some web interface to review all spam filtered from the mailbox?
Thanks

Quarantined mail is NOT sent to the inbox, it stays on a webui where you as the domain admin, or the user (login with their user/pass of email) can select it and pass it on. They can optionally also whitelist and also retrain captured spam as not spam if required there.

For each plan, we will assign one ‘admin’ user then any domains under it to your admin account. Each user can authenticate to the same web interface with their email login credentials to get a customized interface or themselves to manage the spam mails and settings.

It sounds very good,
but am concerned that the actions that can only be done on the webui, will just not be done because of the extra steps that need to be done to go there.

I get hundreds of spam emails daily, so am very interested in a effective solution - but its got to be useable - something that can easily be done w/o having extra steps, that even me myself, sitting at a pc most of the day am not sure if i will be able to do just because of extra steps.

2 other questions -

  1. is there some kind of “social” component to the system, where like gmail - if the system sees that many others users have marked this as spam, then the spam “grade” goes higher.
  2. is there some kind of a message sent to spammer, such as a web 404 error - that the email doesnt exist, so maybe they’ll take me off their lists at some point??

Yes it learns, and hopefully better than gmail as I’m getting flooded by the same junk amazon ‘rewards’ mails 10-15 times a day on gmail.

NO, the worst thing you can do with a spammer is reply, because many times they use hijacked addresses, or just create bounces that go endlessly, in turn getting you blocked for spamming.

Not really understanding the concern about the webui. There’s not a lot to do there to be honest, you could login once a week and check it for mis-identified spam but we arne’t seeing a huge issue with this happening much. Get a 5 domain plan an put a domain or two on it see how well it works, then upgrade when you need

The new service is proving a hit with my customers, but there’s one question being asked: How to mark false negatives as Spam? There is the option of blacklisting senders, but generally Spammers use fake or hijacked addresses, so this is usually an ineffective means of marking Spam as you are unlikely to get junk mail from the same address more than once. How does the system learn what is Spam?

Generally it auto learns on a 24 hour basis. A few spam may get through for a short time, but right now we do not have reporting of passed through mail as spam as an option. This is because to do so it introduces a bit of a security concern in that it records and stores a significant portion of the mail on the anti spam server to mark it as such. We chose the more privacy aware route of not allowing this and to allow it to auto learn. To date I’ve had two false negatives and I’ve been using the system far longer than we’ve been offering it as I was testing it out.

It learns through patters and multiple server checks and checksums from anti spam sources over the course of the day.
