Secure Mail Logins

I guess we can all admit that packet sniffing has gotten notorious over the years.

Hence, my questions:

  1. Is there a way to access Web mail through SSL? (For instance, my ISP allows their customers to access e-mails through an SSL-enabled Web site)

  2. Will it be possible to secure logins to SMTP and POP3 servers so that sniffing username and password to these services will not be (practically) possible?
