Time estimates

Hello Jodo, and forum members.

I don’t know if anyone noticed but Jodo never meets it’s estimates about time it will take to complete a task.

“This should take two hours…”
then after two hours:
“This is taking longer than expected…”
then after few hours:
“We are running final checks…”

These kind of stuff have led me to two possible conclusions:

  1. Jodo has very experienced staff, but lies to us, customers. Why? I don’t know. Maybe they think we will protest or do something, if they tell us that HSphere database maintenance will take 12 hours.

  2. Jodo does NOT have experienced staff and they are not able to give realistic estimates. What surprises me most is that for same actions they are giving same wrong estimates. I know when you do something for the first time that you can miss, but if you ever had to scan large hard drive for errors you’ll know that it takes half a day, and you cannot estimate it to be 2 hours.

I would like to hear what other people have to say about this. Which option do you think is true, or if you have your own say what you think? I know what Tanmaya would write…

Honestly I expected it not last even 3 hours. 5 hours was just a cautious ETA.
What all the IP migration utility is doing is way way beyond the actual need and you can’t stop it at this stage without creating another big mess to handle, something that will have a clusterwide effect.

We have done IP migrations in the past, of scope that is hardly done by a one or two of all Hsphere hosts, and the ETA is based on how it worked for us in the past.
Hsphere is way advanced and the IP migration utility has been way buggy with a much different implementation than the one in use now.
It is now much better, but it does a way lot beyond the need just to ensure nothing goes wrong.

Right now it is fixing DNS records Instant access domain aliases for all resellers, something that is completely unrelated, but still being done and we can’t stop it.

As for our experience, if having techs knowing Hsphere since the year 2003 means nothing, then we really need to improve.

I really apologize our estimate turned out to be wrong.
The task is not done every day, and in fact avoided at all costs, or we would have known better.

papaja,

Have you been in the It business very long at all? Computers have a way of doing wild things sometimes.

We never expected what happened we have done a number of ip migrations but not once has it edited EVERY domain/subdomain as it went by, but this time the script did. Then after that it is reposting the shared IP DNS which probably doesn’t make any sense to you, but this is a process that always takes a long time, it is typically isolated from you as a client as the CP is up and running. We can’t figure out why it ran this process since no shared IP was migrated only a handful of dedicated IPs.

I’ve been up all night due to this IP migration and WinCF3, I need to get back to that now.

I’m not saying that you are not working hard, I’ just saying that every estimate you give is way off.

Well, I’ve been in IT for 12 years now and I dare to write because I know few things about servers…

As do I, I have been in the IT business for over 13 years now, and computers and time estimates are exactly that. ESTIMATES.

Things don’t always go as planned.

You know personally I am PISSED that you think we would lie to you.
I am lacking in sleep and all but I do not lie, and if you even thing this you should probably just go.

Experienced? You won’t find many companies with staff that have been at this longer than Tanmaya and Myself.

Hsphere is a beast of a software, and it has big changes between every version, even doing things in a simulated environment is nothing like the real deal, as it has a way of venturing off on it’s own.
We hadn’t done extensive migrations with the current version, but we tested and read the docs throughly and never expected what happened to happen.

I am going to stop now before I blow, because I probably shouldn’t have even said all this. We are more open an honest than any around not hiding anything.

Well, you took everything too personal… which was not my intention.

No if you accuse me of lying, that is very personal because I do not lie, there is no gain for anyone in lying.
you accuse me of being inexperienced, you obviously have not met or worked with me at all.

I did not accuse anyone personally, but if you recognize yourself then it is your problem.
And lying is one option that I suggested, I don’t know why did you stick to that one.

Working with you and Tanmaya on support issues is always a pleasure. Which I cannot say for other employees of Jodo. If one man has experience it does not mean that everyone is experienced. If majority of employees is inexperienced, than company is inexperienced in general.

the buck stops with me. If you say anyone is lying you are saying I am lying. If you say anyone is inexperienced, you are saying I am.

Neither is true. Period. Look at wincf3 restore, that was a total guesstimate, and it was pretty much on the money and sites are flying.

Sometimes ESTIMATES miss, sometimes they don’t, that is the nature of computer work. Now I am going to join my family for lunch and then get some rest, been a long hard night.
