unix2 going down

that may have been my fault.. probably not DDOS.. I stupidly set my facebook app to the wrong domain and that has like a million users.

yes it is facebook IPs, taking LOADs of hits. Using over 15mb/s peaking over 45mb/s sometimes we were wondering why in the world facebook ips(multiple subnets of them, likely multiple servers) would be hitting so hard. It wasn’t so much bandwidth at fault here, but loads of small requests killing apache.

we currently have the IPs firewalled out but we had also nulled your DNS to point to loopback as well. We will edit this since it is not from malicous sources that will continue “attacks” from other IPs.

im sorry about that.. have been out of it the past couple days.. its tough having a top 10 facebook app!

it seems that twitter is dying right now, which is odd, loading your page or their main page is just blank. you see that too?
BTW, we have undone all changes all all BUT facebook can now reach the server.

stephen.. the reason that facebook apps are dying is this…

Facebook disabled image caching on profiles so that all the images were being requested from the original servers.

ouch, and your 1.3 million users (I signed and logged in), then had to go requesting the images…nasty… did they give any warning for that?

absolutely no warning at all.
