Use of PGP

I can set up PGP on SquirrelMail as it has the options available to do so on the control panel, however when I attempt to encrypt/sign an email it tells me that I am not connected to the mail server by a secure connection, so I can’t use PGP.

This isn’t a mega-urgent showstopper so if it won’t work that’s okay. However I wondered whether it is possible to log onto the mail server(s) via SSL?
