web7 and 500 error(s)

Greetings,

I realize Jodo is aware of the web7 issue currently, but the 500 errors seem to be becoming a recurring issue. I have a couple clients that have received the 500 error when viewing their respective WordPress sites. I don’t have this issue in my dev environment, so I have to assume that it’s related to either h-sphere or the web server itself.

Can you (JodoHost) shed any light on what might be causing the error(s), and give us an idea of when the problem(s) may be resolved?

TIA,

-jason

I second this concern. First it was web8 tossing random 500 errors now web7.

There is clearly something VERY wrong.

When our clients begin complaining to us (resellers) we come to you (Jodohost) for answers. However, I have received ZERO answers to the recurring nature of these server problems and have been pursuing it well over a month.

Why does this continue? Why is it happening in the first place? Why is it now happening on yet another server? Why hasn’t it been resolved?

We lose client, jodo loses resellers. You need to be more forthcoming with what is going on. Our clients’ confidence is falling. At some point we have to consider saving ourselves the headaches.

I had a couple issues on web8 as well, but passed them off as “glitchy” due to the rarity that I myself experienced the issue. But when I saw it happening on web7, and clients complained, it became clear that something is not right.

So, it would be interesting to see what jodo has to say … if anything!

http logs? mod security may be doing this…

Jason,

I’m aware of web7 problem and will be working on it shortly.

squidz,

Are you seeing the problem post upgrade too?

Stephen … thanks for responding, but is this meant as a response for us? I ask because I don’t understand what you mean by what you said. Can you explain a little further?

thanks, Tanmaya!

sure, if you enable http logs and look they can many times give details behind errors.

I know Tanmaya is checking into it, and I know on windows a few memory leaks occurred after update(even taking down jh site a bit this morning) on the windows side…I’d not be surprised if a few on linux as well.

Still seeing these random 500 errors appear on web8 on a regular basis – any thoughts on what might be causing it and how it can be resolved?

It is still being checked out, we know what is causing it at the high level, but what is making that is important and harder to find, it is some scripts making resource usage spike very high.

@stephen - when you say “it is some scripts making resource usage spike very high”, are you suggesting PHP scripts in one or more websites, or scripts that run internally to h-sphere or on the server?

also, can you tell what it is at the high level?

@thingwarbler - are you running WordPress, and if so, what plugins, if any?

wrsowner,

No, my client is a Joomla site, but I’m guessing the script architecture may be similar to Wordpress and pushes the same buttons in hsphere. I’ve noticed the 500 fail particularly on a first-time hit on a back-end page where a wysiwyg editor has to load up w/ scripts etc. – I’ve got the site running multiple levels of caching, and I’m guessing that the issue may be related to a) uncached content placing a load on the server as it’s processed (joomla is notorious for running some chunky sql calls for first-time page loads), or b) the caching process itself (incl. compressing js and css on the fly) may require some increased resources.

great feedback, thanks. i’m not as aware of the internals of WordPress, as i’m still fairly new to it. my hope is that the add’l info will help Stephen and the JH folks in troubleshooting further.

A customer script/s, not internal.

Ahh, and right now the 500 error is all-consuming – can’t get any response from the site on that box at all… ;-(

We will be able to setup a move here tonight/morning if required, as finding the source of the issues is being a large job in itself we have some big new servers setup that will help. We planned in these post upgrade already, but maybe pushed into service a bit before planned, but they are ready and have been up for a while now.

Thx. The source behind some of the joomla components and templates is becoming increasingly bloated and resource-intensive (sometimes multiple versions of core js engines and excessive SQL calls), and I always worry that they’re going to push the envelope to the point where a shared hosting/reseller environment becomes too limiting, even for relatively low-volume sites.

Please let us know if the spikes you are seeing can be traced back to some of the bells & whistles that our clients are increasingly asking for – it’s helpful if we need to go back and tell them “yeah, well it’s VPS time, then…”

We are evaluating the options on that as well, we looked at litespeed this week. 8o

I can see it being a benefit for sure, but I am not sure we are to that point yet.

I’ve submitted a question for input on the customer only section of the forums.

Done some changes. Let me know if web7 is any better now.
