Mine’s been “off” all day, also. I don’t know that it makes sense to file a ticket, as it seems to be working normally now (I almost immediately received a test message from outside my domains). Earlier, I sent two test messages, one from within and one outside, which have YET to be received.

Could there be messages still queued up?

Overall, it seems like email has been quite unstable lately. In addition to lost and delayed messages, I often get kicked off both Horde and DWMail…

Mail 1 has been jammed up for hours a couple of times over the last couple of days. I have two clients complaining that incoming mail has been delayed for many hours. The SMTP graph on Jodopulse was showing in the red yesterday for about 3.5 hours and the alarm was going off continuously. We really need to be kept informed about stuff like this.

No email has been lost. There was a delay today during peak hours, that caused POP3 to be sluggish in patches.
we are working to fix that permanently. This issue is exclusively on mail1

I asked Psoft to include a patch that may help with this problem.
They are creating a new build with few more patches that will resolve many associated issues. I’ll see if one of the available updates can be applied within next couple of days.

I don’t think I’ve ever totally lost mail in the 2 years I’ve been on JH, but I have had incoming mail rejected. I got this back at 15:25pm today, for a mail I sent to a client at 14:22 yesterday. (The mail was telling her that there was no report of a mail problem on the host forum, but that I’d look into it.)

"Hi. This is the qmail-send program at mail2.m****here.biz.
I’m afraid I wasn’t able to deliver your message to the following addresses.
This is a permanent error; I’ve given up. Sorry it didn’t work out.

[email protected]:
Sorry, I wasn’t able to establish an SMTP connection. (#4.4.1)
I’m not going to try again; this message has been in the queue too long."

It wasn’t lost, completely, but it seems it wasn’t delivered either, and it took over 24 hours to come back.

I know it’s not always possible to give definite reports on what’s happening, but in this situation, where there’s obviously a problem but no-one at JH is acknowledging it, I only have two choices. I can tell my clients that I’m clueless to what’s going on, or I can lie. If I’m going to lie, I would like something to go on.

As it is, this client has told me she needs ‘way’ more reliability. She says she lost a big order because she didn’t respond to an expected incoming mail that never arrived. I’ve told her that this is the first email problem she’s had in over a year (apart from all the very important delayed mail she had the day before), and that any ‘value’ host is going to be similar or (much more likely) worse, but it seems ‘I’ cost her a $1500 order and she’s going to take her $25 a month and ‘invest it in a more reliable host’.

Good luck to her with that one, but it’s likely to cost me a lot more than that. When non-webby people get a new host, they also tend to go with the associated web developer and general office help. I lose out on a lot more than the hosting charge. So that’s a sixth of my income at risk because she didn’t get one mail…

okay, just ranting… my 4-year-old did all her times tables up to 10 today with no mistakes, so it’s not a total loss.

Yep, what Bro said.

I was about to argue with the “no mail has been lost” statement, when one of my messages bounced back to me over 24 hours later. So, technically, it’s not lost.

Same scenario:

Hi. This is the qmail-send program at mail2.my****ere.biz.
I’m afraid I wasn’t able to deliver your message to the following addresses.
This is a permanent error; I’ve given up. Sorry it didn’t work out.

[email protected]:

I’m not a reseller, so I don’t have to deal with upset customers or worry about lost business. But I do need my email to be reliable, as I use it for personal business.

Please help us understand what is going on, and what it will take to fix or resolve it, and when.

I wonder if the whole server just needs to be replace, because the other mail servers are pretty realiabe, but the occisional spam attacks and queue build ups. If one of the other mail servers has problems, when its tweaked they usually stay fixed.

Mail-1 has been problems for a very long time. I almost lost a customer also that came from a well knowed hosting company to my company.

Bro & Zarro, both of your bounces came from mail2. It is being badly spammed and it floods mail1 with thousands of spam every hour. Thus it gets blocked on mail1 and not able to deliver mails causing the bounce.
For your information, mail2 receives almost 70,000-100,000 mails per day. This practically means all our mailservers are down. But no, 99.9% of these mails are spam targeting secondary MX. To add, mail2 alone does 230000 rejections from known spamming IPs per day, if allowed may results in another 300000+ spam mails easily. I dont think your clients will be happy to have these thousands of spam in their mailboxes.
Why we dont mention all this? because this doesnt solves your problem. I’m still going to see why sender emailed mail2 and not mail1.

Mail1 has been having problems due to some known issues i told Psoft more than a year back. Now “many” hosts are facing same issue and Psoft is forced to listen and work on it.
If we need immediate permanent solution, i would ask everyone on mail1 to remove forwards.
But we cant as this is not viable. Problem is that big number of clients have mails being forwarded to various ISP mailservers. They are not available many times or simply doesnt accept mail being busy or some tarpit delay. Thus message remains queued at our end for some hours unless they are up early.
Yesterday itself, a client had 150 mails(some kind of automated notification of errors on a website), they were delivered fine locally, but the remote mailserver(that belongs to a big brand) was not responding for hours.

WebD, It isnt the hardware, but we are evaluating all options. It easily rejects 65000 spam mails at SMTP session(after content check) and blocks approx 150000 spamming IPs per day. Issues on mail1 though have been there in continuity, are not all same.

I would here like to say, we are always there to help you. If you feel you are loosing a client, do let us know and we will do our best to keep them happy. If something is really urgent due to mail1 issue and we can help by moving his domain to some other mailserver, please let me know.
