Because of something I call ‘jodo Hell’.
Every few years, and lately every few months, I went through jodo Hell.
This is when all your sites go down, or slow to a Galapagos Tortoise CRAWL.
Tech support is only via ticket, and it’s glacial, and most of the techs are inept.
One day I happened to go to the jodohost.com site and saw they were now hosting people for $2.99/month.
That’s right…TWO dollars and ninety nine CENTS for hosting. I was aghast.
And I then realized why tech support had gone down the crapper…they were helping 2.99 morons set up their EMail…lol.
I was originally a reseller there…I’d been with them for 16 years or so…and they were great…
But after several episodes of jodo Hell, I decided to get a VPS for my main sites that I make my living on.
That was good…and a lot faster than shared hosting. It was $60/month, but I felt it was well worth it…until:
They decided to move to a new data center…WITHOUT telling anybody.
My main sites slowed to a crawl…scripts wouldn’t finish…it was insane…and then I found out why.
They’d moved the site files to the new data center…BUT left the databases on the Old center until they could get around to moving them. What that meant is ALL sites that used a DB had to talk to the old center…and it was NUTS…Slow is not the word for it…lol.
I then decided to get a Dedicated Server ($120/month) hoping to solve all these problems. It came with plesk (Please Wait) onyx (btw…Stay the hell away from plesk…it is a bloated PIG that takes forever to do things. It’s designed for noobies that don’t know much, and you have LITTLE control of the important things…get cPanel instead…has WAY more control and options…might take a bit longer to learn, but you’ll grow into it in a hurry…a lot faster than you will grow OUT of plesk (Please Wait)…lol..)
So then things were OK for a few months and one Friday morning the dedicated server crashed. ALL my websites were down.
My main website that I use to make my living, put food on my table and pay my utilities was also down.
Customers started calling…at first…then Screaming.
Due to the antiquidated support system at jodohost (support tickets ONLY), and their Failure to resolve whatever it was, my sites were down for 4 DAYS!
Many of their support reps are absoluteley Inept…there’s only one good one (Stephen), and he’s really mainly focused on Windows hosting not Linux…but he did manage to get the sites up eventually.
I found out later that they had done over 200 updates to both the server and the plesk (Please Wait) control modules, and caused stuff that had worked before to Fail.
I figure that latest snafu cost me over $3,000…and who knows how much more, since my business is based on monthly subscriptions.
I had already moved a lot of my sites to Media Temple (OUTSTANDING hosting company…with 24/7/365 PHONE support)…and after the latest crash at jodo, I decided to get a DV from Media Temple for $50/month and move ALL THE REST of it there.
Being at Media Temple is like living in a clean open airy place…as opposed to the mud filled swamp I’d been in at jodohost.
So that’s the story…hopefully it prevents others from pain and suffering, and leads them to a hosting company and control panel, that is top shelf.
PS. Media Temple does NOT host sites for 2.99 …lol…their lowest hosting option is a Grid Server for $20/month where you can host up to 100 sites…And their tech support is out of this world…Highly Recommended!!
