I have been researching options a bit on what we can do about the growing use of dynamic sites, errors that come from them (and security issues too!), and what our options are.

We’ve already evaluated Cloudlinux a bit, and that is certainly an option on many regards, but it will shut down your site or throttle it to very very slow if it is seen as abusive, which isn’t an option for some clients for understandable reasons.

So we’ve been looking into litespeed based servers, ideally we were thinking we could roll it out across all linux servers and have a really great system across the board, but the costs for that just don’t make economic sense as a business…

At the same time people start to evaluate a VPS, then they need management, to monitor etc, SD is an option but yes it is a bit costly and we are running only 10-15 accounts per server on SD servers, with only a handful more than that in domains as most use it for a single domain, and a subdomain or two.

So what about offering as an option, a flat rate addon fee per month to be on a server with litespeed web services? I don’t know what pricing yet but on a dual cpu it would cost us $42 a month or thereabout with a reseller program discount.

At $2 per account/month(with a domain limit in account of probably 3-5, just thinking out loud here) it could be break even with just 21 people doing this, and it would have significantly better than even an apache server with 10 accounts. (and we’d probably need to add litespeed on SD services just to keep it balanced!)

my question is, would you support doing something alacart like this? Having and maintaining a low base rate, with addons to the featureset at good prices, that do not hit the pocketbook like a VPS or SD solution would?

Edit: $2 probably would not justify the costs of hardware for the litespeed server with 21 accounts, it would probably be morethan that to be optimal performance, and server working out as a service for the long haul and not a short experiment. also since it is a drop in apache replacement and tested already with hsphere we’d be able to migrate you linux to linux as simple as moving servers, there would be no complexity like moving to a VPS.

Edit 2: After talking to staff here need to clarify, this would be as part of reseller program or shared, to move to a litespeed powered server, so a $2/month fee per account applied to the bill for being on that server. Also this $2 is just a sample price, nothing ‘set’ or decided about it or the idea, we want your feedback :slight_smile:

So I changed the topic hoping maybe it will catch someone’s eye more now.

This is not all about litespeed alone, I want to know more things like the concept itself, offering addons to the base plan at many levels, on a basis of per account, at some very affordable rate. What kind of addons may be available in the future?

I have a short list, and some longer term lists but let me cherry pick a few ideas.

Redundancy of server with failover if one goes down :kiss:

Geo Diversity, or pick your location in the more distant future (a renewal of an idea we proposed a long time ago, but could not work out due to a number of factors, bandwidth and pricing is coming into some level of parity it may indeed work as an idea soon)

special functions like a ‘full trust’ server that we will still maintain backups on, but you need to be cautious of code, and accept that there is more risk on a full trust web server, this could be a very minor cost or no cost, just want to see reception of such as a process, to move to such server.

There are other ideas floating around here as well…the entire idea of it is to keep a low base cost for all, yet maintain an option line that we have not had to date, that can be accessed easily. We are not committing to do any of these things mentioned above in any way, however they are some options on the table for future growth!

Geo Diversity would be beneficial to those of us in Australia/New Zealand
As updates and maintenance ran by JodoHost after midnight usually end up being smack bang in the middle of the day here in Australia.

Godiversity and Redundancy are definite pluses. Anything to bring down bandwidth cost would be greatly appreciated; even at the platinum reseller level, we’re exceeding the envelope…

Bandwidth side is being worked on already. Geo is probably the furthest away right now, but just wanted to gauge the reception to it again.

I remember a talk about the West Coast N. America server… but that never materialized but would be beneficial. Full trust shared enviroment would be nice as I currently have to run a site on a VPS that really doesn’t need to be dedicated like that. A-la-carte is definitely fine with me, don’t mind paying for incremental service that I use.

Here’s some ideas.

  1. Separate the professional users from the run of the mill newbies/unknown users on servers.

  2. Offer a higher level of hosting for professional/other users who want better service…and charge a premium for it…like maybe $10 extra/month…count me in…

  3. In other words…don’t make the plans just dependent on transfer/disk storage amounts…offer an option for upgraded servers/service, etc.

I’m reminded of some host that charges like $500/month or so…and gets it…While that may be extreme, I bet a lot of people would be willing to pay a bit more for premium service/servers…z

I agree with you fully and why I introduced this topic here, I just wanted to bring it to your attention, after we are done with this migration we’ll be in a place we can offer a much broader range of services than we’ve ever done before including the baseline, and increased options off of that.

I think it is a good medium between the low end, mid range, and super high end doing it this way, and we’ll be able to offer those all in one platform as well.
