DNS Question for a subdomain hosted elsewhere

Hi,

I have a client that has an critical application wich requiers special attention and resources and is to be hosted on his own location on a subdomain.
I have already manage to set up this in Hsphere and it's working.
So, he has an IP, 123.123.123.123, to which I forward the requests to subdomain.hisdomain.com via a DNS record in HSphere. But the client has also a backup link, in case the main one fails. How can I setup his so if the 123.123.123.123 is down to forward the request to 456.456.456.456? Would just adding a new A DNS record would do?

DNS is not really for this, if you do the A record it will hit both sites depending on which record is picked first, as long as te data is synced he will be in good shape.

It doesn't allow me to add a DNS record with the second IP. How would it otherwise know to get the other one in case the first is down?
