DNS Question, I think....

I host chillywhack.com com here, and I purchased the domain name here as well. I have another one that I host here as well. Here is my question:

I am switching my ISP's so I can have a dedicated IP at home, and I do have web server. What will I need to do to point chillywhack.com to my new static IP, once I get it, so I can host that domain at my home?

I checked the domain control panel, but the only thing I had found was an area where you could actually modify which DNS server to use, not a place to modify the DNS records to resolve chillywhack.com to a different IP.

Thanks

Tony

I don't believe it's possible unless you have a reseller account (in which case you can remove the website from JodoHost and then add the domain in the DNS Manager).

If you don't have a reseller account, the easiest would be to change the DNS servers for that domain to a 3rd party one, like everydns.net. They're free, though donations are appreciated and required for some of the more advanced features.

I don't know what kind of connection you will switch to, but keep in mind that Cablemodem and ADSL usually have relatively limited upstream bandwidth, so it's only advisable for very low traffic websites.

If you want to keep the mailserver running at JodoHost, you will have to use a third party DNS, unless I'm missing something.

Thanks! Should work out for me. My connection is 1.5\867 so I should be fine, but the sites I have are just personal sites for trying things out and a bit of FTP stuff.

Again, thanks for the help!

I would suggest you check your ISP's TOS as many don't allow you to run a web server, ftp server, whatever from your home. An initial http test would be a good idea too to see if the ISP has bvlocked port 80 (http) and 21 (ftp).

Yeah, that too.. Didn't think of it since my ISP allows pretty much everything, except they like to block incoming SMTP for some reason :(
Blocking outgoing SMTP I can more or less understand, even though it would piss me off, but blocking incoming SMTP is just annoying :(

Anyway, like Logan said, make sure you check the ISP's website for the TOS.
