Does webshell extract gz feature overwrite files?

I need to upgrade a site's content management system. When setting up new sites, I upload a tar.gz file and extract it with the webshell feature in the control panel. I think I've tried in the past and found that webshell won't overwrite existing files. But I'm not positive of that.

Before I try and screw up this working site, does anyone know for sure? Will extracting the file overwrite existing files?

If so, it will save me an hour of uploading thousands of individual files.

Thanks,
Tim

Thanks Stephen. That's what I thought. I'm going to give a try at a php script to extract and overwrite the CMS files. If that doesn't work, I'll do the old FTP separate files method.

Thanks,

I usually do that sort of thing by moving it into into a subdirectory, extracting and then copy or move the extracted files. The copy or move overwrites (I think it prompts on the first file) and it's safer if I'm not sure how the file will extract, ie, does it extract into the top level or make it's own subdirectory?

You can do that with the webshell tool? Wow, I'll have to play with that. I ended up having to FTP some 1500 files to upgrade the CMS. What a pain!
